It is common for many expectant women to experience dental problems. Dental issues such as cavities, gingivitis and periodontitis are common, and if left untreated, these conditions can easily harm both the mother and the baby. In order to avoid being victims of these dental problems, pregnant women should practice the following:

Brushing and Flossing

Expectant women should brush after each meal. Brushing removes food remains that accumulate under the gums. Accumulation of these food remains often leads to dental problems, and by brushing teeth after each meal, pregnant women are reducing risks of experiencing oral complications. Flossing on the other hand should be undertaken at least once a day to keep and maintain healthy teeth.

Drinking Water and Gum Chewing

Gum chewing enhances flow of saliva. Increased flow of saliva enhances washing of food debris, neutralization of plaque acids, and helps in keeping bacteria away. In order to get good results, pregnant women are advised to chew a sugar free gum. Expectant mothers are also advised to take a glass of water after every meal.

Checking the Dentist

Since pregnant women are at a higher risk of contracting dental diseases, it is only wise that they seek the help of the dentist. The dentist will diagnose them for any diseases, offer medication and give relevant tips on how to maintain a great oral health. For instance the dentist will advise on what foods to be taken, beverages to be avoided and hygienic practices to be practiced.

Cleansings

Cleansing removes excess food debris thus enhancing long-term dental health. The good thing is that cleansings are not harmful to the expectant mothers. For this reason it is good for pregnant women to see a dentist for periodical cleansings. Although the ideal duration is after every six months, a dentist may advise for frequent cleansings especially in cases where patients have a history of periodontal or gingivitis diseases.
